Four hundred-plus mapped miles of limestone labyrinth breathe cool and steady beneath the green Kentucky hills.
This is the longest known cave system on Earth, and no amount of reading prepares you for the scale of it — chambers that swallow lantern light, passages that have been mapped for two centuries and still aren't finished. The ranger-led tours turn a hole in the ground into a story about explorers, enslaved guides, saltpeter miners, and Cold War fallout shelters. As the last big stop before the run home to Georgia, it's a fitting finale: enormous, humbling, and cool underground when the surface is baking.

The classic mistake
Showing up without a reservation and finding every ranger-led tour sold out; the cave is only accessible on guided tours, and the good ones book out days or weeks ahead.

How long do you need?
Half a day minimum — most tours run 1 to 2.5 hours, plus time above ground for the visitor center and trails.
